Dedicated in 1975, the Libby Dam on the Kootenai River is a cornerstone of water resource management in the Pacific Northwest. The dam serves multiple purposes, including flood control, hydropower generation, and recreation. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Libby Dam plays a crucial role in the Columbia River Basin, contributing significantly to regional energy needs.

Modernizing a Legacy Project
In 2014, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers embarked on a critical project to modernize the dam’s aging electrical distribution equipment. Pick Electric Inc., a leading contractor, was awarded the contract and subsequently engaged ControlFreek Inc. to design and build essential electrical distribution panels for both the dam and powerhouse.
Advanced Control Solutions
ControlFreek Inc. leveraged Allen-Bradley’s Bulletin 1756 ControlLogix® I/O modules to create a robust and flexible control system. These modules, integrated across an Ethernet network, provide a comprehensive range of capabilities, including digital and analog I/O, motion control, and specialized I/O for specific application requirements. This state-of-the-art solution enhances the dam’s operational efficiency and reliability.
